When he was a young boy, Nikolas lived in the woods with his father. They were poor and lived in a one room cabin together. They ate only the mushrooms that Nikolas picked in the woods. One day a hunter came to father with a proposition. He needed the wood cutting skill of his father on his journey traveling north. The hunter was searching for the legendary village of elves. If he could prove that it existed, the king would make him rich.

So Nikolas was sent to live with his mean Aunt Carlotta. She was stern, full of rules, and greedy. Without any love, she only agreed to watch him because she was being paid. His aunt made him sleep outside in the cold while she slept on both mattresses. But when his aunt disparages his mother and calls his father a stupid liar for believing in elves, Nikolas had enough. He decided to run away and find his father.

Along the way, he makes friends with a reindeer. And saves time riding north on him. Soon he finds his father and the hunter. But when he finds out that they have kidnapped an elf to take back to the king, he is furious. Nikolas was good and couldn’t stand for that. So he risks everything to rescue to the elf and take him home to the elusive elf village.

Young readers will love this magical tale of the Old Saint Nick in his early years. This whimsical book is filled with numerous fun illustrations. I especially loved the little asides throughout explaining the world. It felt like he was sitting there next to me reading the story.
