Paperback: 176 pages

At the ripe age of thirteen, an Eskimo girl living in Alaska is forced to marry a boy she doesn’t like. He is dumb and comes from a bad family. Worst of all, he doesn’t treat her right. With no other options, she decides to run away from home and go live with her pen pal in San Francisco. Julie, as her pen pal calls her, packs a bag with a week’s worth of food and some supplies and sets off walking to the town. She plans on taking a boat from the Artic shores to the bustling city. But along the way, she gets lost in the vast, white tundra.

As her food runs out, she is forced to learn how to survive. Julie remembers the lessons that her father taught her and channels her Eskimo heritage. Stumbling across a wolf pack, she settles in near them, hoping to get some of their leftover food. Studying them, she learns their methods to find food, shelter, and more.

Slowly Julie approaches the wolves. Little by little they begin to interact with her. They bring her food and began to treat her like one of the cubs. She comes to love the wolves as her brothers. In time she becomes a full-fledged member of the pack. As she grows, Julie rejects the thoughts of traveling to a far off city. She embraces her Eskimo traditions and carves out a life for herself in the wilderness.

This is a fascinating story and will inspire young readers. I especially loved the interactions with the wolves that were so tender and realistically developed. Young readers who love survival stories will adore this fun book.
