Corrine is a typical tom-boy raised by her widowed father on an island in the Caribbean. He is a fisherman and spends most of his time working as sea. So that gives plenty of time for Corrine to roam the island on her own.
They live together in a small house by the shore, on the edge of a forbidden forest. No one goes in for fear of the jumbies. But Corrine and her father don’t believe in such rumors. He always told her the forest is dangerous because of wild animals. So she wasn’t instilled with the fear of most of the people on the island.
That is why she was so brave and foolish to run into it chasing after an agouti that two boys had tied her mother’s necklace to. Corrine was not about to lose the precious necklace, one of the few things she has left of her dead mother. She soon discovers that the woods are scarier than she imagined. The hairs on the back of her neck stand up and she senses danger. Then she spots a pair of glowing yellow eyes in the darkness of the woods. Could it be the jumbies?
Luckily, she races through the mahogany forest and gets home safely. But something follows her back. The next day a mysterious, beautiful woman known as Severine appears in the village market. Corrine is there selling the infamous oranges that she grows. Gossip erupts across the market as the woman approaches the white witch on the edge of the market. Even Corrine is curious.
Later, Corrine returns home to find Severine in her home with her father, cooking dinner. Something is off and Corrine knowns it. Before she knows it, the woman is always there, following her father around like a lost puppy. Then Corrine discovers that Severine is no ordinary woman. She is a jumbie. She has cast a spell on her father and is determine to turn him, Corrine, and the whole island into jumbies.
