Tis the season for giving. Christmas lights are illuminating the night. Holiday music is reverberating through radios across the land. Children are counting down the days to their Christmas Break from school.

With sugar plums dancing in the heads of young readers, it is the perfect time to inspire them to read with a fun, holiday themed book. Here are some of my favorite holiday reads:

The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig

The Girl Who Saved Christmas by Matt Haig

Amelia Wishart was the very first child in the whole world to ever receive a Christmas present. Her Christmas spirit was the power that gave Santa his extra boost of magic that he needed to make his first trip around the globe. But now she is in trouble.

Her mother has fallen ill. So she is sent off to a terrible workhouse to toil under the nasty thumb of Mr. Creeper. She spends an entire year scrubbing the floors and eating disgusting gruel without any faint expression of kindness to keep her going.

This causes the magic in the North Pole to drain dangerously low. As Christmas approaches, Santa sets out with a curious cat, a trusty reindeer, and Charles Dickens to find and rescue Amelia in order to save Christmas.

Top Elf by Caleb Huett

Top Elf by Caleb Huett

Celia and Ollie think that they know what the life of one of Santa’s elves is supposed to be like. It involves making toys, helping Santa, making more toys, then helping Santa again, trying the latest ice-cream flavor, then helping Santa one more time.

But when Santa gives a surprise announcement at the North Pole, everything changes. He decides to retire from wearing the Big Red Suit. And instead of letting his oldest son take over the business, he is opening up the position for any kid or elf.

Both Celia and Ollie each enter the contest without realizing that they will soon need to race runaway sleighs, squeeze through impossible chimneys, sweet talk a gang of rowdy reindeer, and eat a wicked amount of milk and cookies. It is an adventure and survival test far beyond what any kid or elf has been required to do before. But whoever is the wins will get a present greater than Christmas itself.
