Sam Gribley grew up in a loving family of nine children in New York city. Life was good, but unfulfilling. The stories of his great-grandfather working on the farm in the Catskill Mountains danced in his head. Soon it was too alluring. He need his own adventure. Sam was determined to make his dream a reality. So he packed up with an axe and some flint and steel and ran away from home.
Alone on the side of the mountain, he starts to etch out a life for himself. At first it is difficult. It takes a while for Sam to learn how to start a fire. Or where and when to catch fish. But with quick wits and determination, he learns to survive. He watches the squirrels and birds and learns what plants are safe to eat. Paying close attention to their behavior and Sam learns to detect when a storm is brewing and it is time to seek shelter.
With each obstacle he overcomes, he learns more. After a few months, he is a seasoned wilderness expert. He constructs home inside of a massive, hollowed out tree. Sam adopts a falcon that helps him catch food. He even befriends a weasel and a raccoon. Soon rumors of a boy living alone in the wood spread through the nearby town. But nobody really believes it.
